In 2002, a filmmaker from Atlanta had a brilliant idea: incorporating tequila into a homemade hot sauce. From this inspiration, Bootlikker Hot Sauce was born!
Made with cayenne and jalapeño peppers, this unique, savory sauce is a variation on a classic Louisiana-style pepper sauce, with a tangy vinegar base and a smooth consistency that is thin but not runny. The aroma of the tequila is immediately apparent, but upon tasting the sauce, its flavor is quite subtle. While the bright, fruity cayenne peppers dominate the flavor profile, the tequila highlights the freshness of the jalapeños and brings them to the forefront. The acidity of the vinegar complements the peppers rather than overpowering them, enhanced by a dash of salt. The vinegar also amplifies the peppers’ heat, while keeping their flavors front and center. Hints of garlic and onion back up the peppers, vinegar, and tequila.
Spicy but not overwhelming, with a bold, savory flavor; Bootlikker Hot Sauce makes an excellent wing sauce.
