Bulgogi Asian BBQ Sauce By: Sweet Heat Gourmet
Based out of State College, Pennsylvania, Sweet Heat Gourmet was founded in 2011 by Shellie and Dave Mierwald.
To create her Bulgogi Asian BBQ Sauce, Shellie adapted a traditional Korean bulgogi marinade recipe that she got from her sister-in-law, turning it into a BBQ sauce that can also double as a marinade. Over the years, this sauce has won numerous awards and is now Sweet Heat Gourmet’s best-selling product.
What makes this BBQ sauce so special is that it is a perfect balance of all five of the basic tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami (savory).
Tomatoes provide the base, but they are paired with soy sauce and sesame oil as well as sweet pears, honey, brown sugar, and spices. It’s the soy sauce, sesame oil, and spices that give this sauce distinctive Asian flair, with a hint of Worcestershire sauce accenting the rich, savory undertones.
The saltiness comes from the soy sauce as well. Rice vinegar brings both acidity and a hint of sweetness, while garlic and scallions complement the tomatoes… the scallions and spices even provide a touch of heat.
While this one-of-a-kind BBQ sauce was created with bulgogi in mind, its uses aren’t limited to just Korean BBQ… use it as a marinade for chicken, tofu, or portobello mushrooms; try it with steak, seafood, ribs, wings, roasted vegetables, noodle dishes, burgers, and sandwiches, or even quesadillas. Also makes a great dipping sauce for Asian dumplings, onion rings, or chicken nuggets.
